From Efrén López:
As we did six years ago in Mataró, in “Shine while you’re alive” we will perform, for twelve hours, several improvised variations on the earliest documented complete existing melody. The composition, which dates back to the 2nd century BC, is called the “Seikilos epitaph”, since it was carved by a man called Seikilos on the funerary headstone of his wife Euterpe. She was buried in a cemetery in Aydın, nowadays Turkey, near the ancient city of Ephesus.
The text that accompanies the melody perfectly defines the objective of the act: to shake our consciences and to make us question ourselves through the examples of commitment and individual effort:
“Shine while you are alive
don’t be sad anything at all
because life is short
and time demands its toll”.
